Parasnath Hills – A Sacred Place in Jharkhand
Parasnath Hills are located in the Giridih district of Jharkhand and are about 1,350 metres high. This place is very important for Jain pilgrims, who call it Sammed Shikhar. It is believed that 20 Jain Tirthankaras (spiritual leaders) got salvation here. There are many small temples (called tuks or gumtis) on the hill for each Tirthankara. Some temples are said to be over 2,000 years old.
The hill is also special for the Santhal tribe, who call it Marang Buru, meaning the hill of their god. They celebrate a hunting festival here every year in April, on the full moon day of Baisakh.
